Network Equipment
Network devices are used to combine, split, switch, amplify, or route packets of information on computer or telecommunications networks. This product range includes hubs, switches, routers, bridges, gateways, multiplexers, transceivers and firewalls. In addition to device type, network equipment is defined by protocol (eg Ethernet) and port or interface type. These concepts are explained below.
How network devices work
Network devices connect devices so that they can exchange data. The layout or topology of these connected devices represents the design or structure of the network. Common computer network topologies include buses, rings, stars, trees, and meshes. Hybrid topologies are also used.
In a wireless network, devices communicate using radio waves and do not require a physical connection. Cables are used in wired networks. These cables have connectors for specific port or interface types. For example, the AUI (Attachment Unit Interface) cable has a 15-pin connector that mates with a 15-pin jack on a network transceiver.
